Library Research Support: Open Research: Gold OA

This guide is intended to provide advice and support on open access research, including guidance around Durham Research Online (DRO), open access publishing, research data management and related topics.

Applying for OA funding from the UK Research Council Block Grant

The University receives a grant from UKRI to pay open access costs for papers acknowledging funding from AHRC, BBSRC, ESRC, EPSRC, MRC, NERC or STFC. This grant is administered centrally by the Library for peer-reviewed journal articles and conference proceedings by Durham University-affiliated corresponding authors and/or PIs of eligible grants.

The "RCUK Open Access Policy" and FAQs can be accessed directly via the UKRI webpages.

Requests for funding should be made to the Open Access team either via the Staff Profile System or via email and must be made prior to requesting Gold open access from a publisher. For full details please see the Request Funding Libguide.

Factoring OA costs into a grant application

A funder may consider open access charges an allowable cost for their grant. Please ensure that you refer to the conditions of the grant or contact the funder directly for information.

The average cost of an APC paid for by the Library in 2018-19 was approximately £2300 (including VAT); however, this fee can vary dramatically across publishers and journal titles (the range over this period was from £200 to £5016.40 for an individual APC). The Open Access team can provide a more detailed breakdown of potential costs, if required.

Paying for open access as a researcher with no external funding

Durham University has a preference for the green route to open access and as a result does not provide any central funds to cover the costs of gold open access.

Some fully open access journals operate waiver schemes for their fees. You should investigate these prior to submission and contact the Library Open Access team if you would like any further guidance.

The University invests in a number of deals with publishers which will save Durham-affiliated corresponding authors up to 100% on the cost of an Article Processing Charge (APC). To find out more about these please go to our Publisher Deals guide.

Open Access Monograph Costs

The below costs are for information only.  The Block Grant does not currently cover open access costs for book chapters or monographs which acknowledge UKRI funding and the library does not have an open access fund for non UKRI funded authors.
