A guide on how to create and maintain reading lists using Talis Aspire

Welcome

This guide is for students and for academic staff to find out how Durham University Library and Collections supports reading lists. Select the topic you require from the tabs along the top.

Students can find how to access reading lists in the Talis Aspire and reading lists tab.

Tutors, please be aware

Tutors can now notify the Library of new materials needed to support reading lists to directly from Talis Aspire instead of copying information into a Word template or Excel spreadsheet. This is the most efficient route for requesting new purchases and scanning. If you cannot edit lists on Talis Aspire yet, please email library.resources@durham.ac.uk to be set up as a list editor.

About Durham University Library and Collections support for reading lists

Durham University Library and Collections aims to facilitate online access to all items of essential reading set for taught modules at all levels of study. We work closely with tutors to achieve this.

We help tutors to check whether suitable online access is available for all items described as ‘essential’, we procure ebooks where available and we scan extracts from our print collections where it is legal to do so.

Students can find a 'Reading List' link in DUO, which will open the module's reading list on Talis Aspire. You should be able to click all essential items described in the online list for your module to be taken to the full text, while selecting titles of background reading will usually take you to the relevant catalogue record to ascertain provision and availability. For background reading it is possible that not all items will be already available in the Library’s collections in 2020-21 due to the impact of Covid-19 on budgets.
